Today is the first of the three most important days to any follower of Jesus. Today is the day where we recognize the death of Jesus. The sacrifice of a perfect man for the sins of sinful mankind. But Jesus death was not just a death; it was a bloody sacrifice as anyone who understands Roman punishment and crucifixion. A bloody sacrifice just like God demanded of his chosen people, the Jews, as a foreshadowing and picture of what Jesus would ultimately do for us.
I've been reading in Exodus and Leviticus in my personal reading and have been giving my attention to the Jewish sacrificial system. A system that seems barbaric and bloody to our modern sensabilities but one that displays the reality of life. That God is holy and that our holiness comes at a price; a bloody price.
This link is GRAPHIC and should be watched with caution, but it is something that moved me in ways that are difficult to describe. On the one hand it brought home the reality of how wicked my sin is and the fact that justice demands payment. It is easy in this age of Grace to lose sight of that. Second, this video made me sad because that slaying did not need to happen because with Christ's death, the ultimate sacrifice has occurred and no longer do Jew or Gentile need the blood of an animal for God's forgiveness. Jesus has paid it all.
