Have you heard about the iPhone application, I Am Rich? Selling for a penny under a $1000, it would install an icon on your phone that's sole purpose (according to the creator of the app) was to remind you and everyone who saw your phone how rich you were.
My first response was to laugh that someone would spend their own time and money to create such a silly app. Then as I thought about more, I realized that this wasn't as stupid an idea as I first thought. Not because the idea had merit, but because I understand the human psyche. With the millions of iPhones sold, I thought there might be several people who would have the ego and the money to spend on it.
And I was right. Before Apple pulled the application off their online store, eight people had actually purchased it. That is $8,000 for the creator - in about a day. We know for sure that one of these eight purchased it by mistake, but still... 8 people?
Think about it. $1000 could feed 4-5 malnourished kids 3 meals a day for an entire year. And yet someone would rather spend it on a small 1/2 inch square icon thats main purpose is to tell people how much money they have.
What an interesting, and sad, commentary on the human spirit.
And by the way, I was not one of those eight people :)
