Why a Half Marathon - The Final Part

I don't know if you're like me, but when I'm in a fitness center, I'm not a big fan of extended conversations. A quick "Hi" or "Hello" is usually enough, but on this special day my interaction with William was much more than that. I quickly discovered a couple things about William
  1. He is a missionary in Thailand who was back in the states for a couple weeks to take care of some ministry issues.
  2. He had started the process of changing his life to get in shape and live healthfully.
  3. He was in pain from his workout the day previous (when he was next to my wife) and was discouraged.
Well, through our conversation I hoped that God was using me to encourage William, but God was also using William to inspire me. Even in his discouragement, William was an encouragement to me and specifically in two ways.

One, he recommended a book that has become the backbone of my training. Slow Burn by Stu Mittleman has been my guidebook on the path of training for this marathon. This book has transformed my thinking about running and, regardless of my race results, has put me on a path to understanding and enjoying the beauty of running.

Two, he said something that serves as the subject for this triumvirate of posts. When running came up, he mentioned a marathon in Thailand that sounded eerily similar to the Myrtle Beach marathon I had heard about a day earlier. And as he talked about it, I received a very clear confirmation in my spirit that running a marathon was for me; that was to be my next fitness goal. I still remember the feeling today, months later.

Now, it did take some time for me to sort this all out, but it was that conversation that was the impetus to what I am getting ready to do on Saturday.

Did I want to run a half marathon? Uh... no. Was I compelled...Yes! Looking back on it now, I am supremely grateful for this direction from God and await with eager anticipation what lies ahead!
